Adoption gone wrong

Adoption...we have talked about with the kids before. In many of our books about 'different' families the topic of adoption is frequently addressed. In the past when I have talked about adoption with the kids I have described it as when someone's mom and/or dad is not able to take care of the baby so they the baby is adopted by another family that will raise them.

I thought this was a reasonable three-year-old explanation until today.

Today we had the pleasure of giving a lawyer over $1,200 to make our family legal in the courts eyes. We filed our paperwork to complete our second parent adoption, so I can be the legal parent of Freya.

Over breakfast while talking about our plans for the day and how we needed to go to the lawyers office to talk about adopting Freya. At which point Reese asked me..."are we having another baby?"

It took me a moment, but I said no - we are not having any more babies. Reese then asked where Freya was going - in her mind, this adoption was going to be giving our baby away to someone else! With many tears and lots of snuggles we assured Reese that no, we were not giving away our baby ...it's just that in our world I am not considered Freya's legal parent and we wanted to fix that.

Maybe I'll call Obama and they can use this as another reason to deal with DOMA.

Christmas Morning

Or something very similar to.

Our kids needed new shoes. They have been askiging for light up shoes, you know the ones that light up with every step. So yesterday we had a bit of time and decided to go shopping.

So we find shoes for.Reese right.away. they are white with pink lights and she proceeded to run around the store with them instantly.

Tanner....we couldn't find his size anywhere. Luckily they had the exact shoe we needed in San Jose and Mel just happened to be heading over the hill for a soccer meeting.

So I took a disappointed Tanner home with the promise.that his shoes would be waiting for him in the morning.  When Mel got home we put he shoes at the foot of.his.bed so he could find them when he woke up.

Jump ahead to 12:20am this morning....

I heard this noise and thought reese was up again, but when I walked out into the hall find Tanner crouched over the shoe box with excitement and he yells "they arrived!" (Not sure who he thinks brought them, but that is another topic.)

He proceeded to put his shoes on and run around the dark house for the next 20minutes.  He was over the moon.

It was pretty cute as I tried to explain it was still time to sleep and pry the shoes from his.feet.  he went to sleep with the box under his ARM until 6 when he was up dressed, and running around with his.shoes again.

Only problem was Reese woken up and stayed up for.the next two hours.....going to be a long day.

Almost worth it with how excited and happy they are.
